sports journalist Grant Wahl died in Qatar on Friday after collapsing on coverage of the 2022 World Cup. A longtime writer for Sports Illustrated, he went on to work for CBS Sports and wrote a column on Substack.

Wahl, who was 48, was at the quarter-final match between Argentina and the Netherlands in Lusail, north of Doha, when he collapsed, Reuters reports.

The US Football Association confirmed his death in oneexpressionon twitter.

According to Wahl’s agent Tim ScanlanWahl “obviously suffered from acute stress at the beginning of extra time” of the game.

Wahl received initial treatment in the press box and was taken to the local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We are in contact with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes,” the SC spokesman said.
