Startups prompt pet industry to watch

Small business specialist Startups identified the pet industry as “an industry to watch this year” following an 18% increase in the number of households buying pets. 2021.

After the surge, 17 million people in the UK now own at least one animal.

product and pet services have been included in its Best Business Ideas 2022, which helps support the demand for pets in the UK. Ideas it proposes include:

Veterinary Technology
exotic animal insurance
Premium Pet Food
pet friendly cafe
Pet Equipment Rental Service

With new animals appearing in so many households, “demand for equipment is on the rise — but some of the equipment needed may only be short-term, temporary,” Startups said.

Another area it has identified is premium pet food. According to Statista, as of 2019, about 10.4% of pet owners surveyed were feeding their dogs an intermittent plant-based diet.

Lucy McKinna, founder of vegan dog food company nucci puppy, said: “After six months, we have a steady stream of new customers, repeat customers and positive reviews. We sell in vegan cafes and vegan supermarkets, and we’ve even received interest from Good Morning Britain.

“The launch of our first product has been very successful, we are expanding our product range and are also looking to invest to take the business to the next level.”

Robert Dawson, Co-Founder Veterinary – AI“We’re seeing what’s happening in human healthcare, with remote services and developing of artificial intelligence. We want to offer the same to help pets.

“We are part of a disruptive wave that is bringing change to a very traditional industry that has struggled to keep up with changes in a world where technology is rapidly evolving.”

Richard Parris, Editor at Startups, added: “Many of these opportunities are available regardless of experience. Not only do we share business trends and data, but we also provide tools to help you from accounting software to website builders.”
