Supreme Court protects access to abortion pill: Michigan responds…

Those of the Supreme Court Friday’s decision to protect access to a widely used abortion drug by freezing lower court rulings restricting its use is seen by some as a victory for the Biden administration and women, who suffered a disappointing defeat than the conservative Court of Roe v. Wade last June.

What happened: The US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug mifepristone 22 years ago and subsequent actions that have made it more accessible will remain in effect while appeals are fought.

Michigan answers

Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement Friday night.

“I will continue to monitor this situation as it moves through the court process and will use every tool in my toolbox to ensure that every Michigander is in control of their own body,” she said.

Senator Gary Peters (D) also shared his thoughts: “Women across the country still have access to abortion drugs for now – but make no mistake: there is still a serious threat to reproductive rights.”

Across the aisle, Republican state leaders appear to remain focused on Michigan’s abortion ban. Pro-life groups are encouraging their supporters to boycott pharmacies that sell abortion or other contraceptives, local news outlets reported.

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) tweeted Friday that the verdict of FDA experts should not be superseded by “judges’ judgments that have no scientific or legal basis. The fight to protect women’s health freedom is not over. As this case continues, Democrats will never stop fighting for access to this vital drug.”

What’s next?

The next step in the lawsuit will be a May 17 hearing in a federal appeals court in New Orleans.
