Taiwan plans to purchase up to 400 land-based Harpoon missiles to defend against a possible attack by Xi Jinping‘s army.

What happened: The purchase is part of a deal approved in 2020 by the US Congress, the head of a trade group and sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The report added that Boeing Co. B.A until now sold ship-launched Harpoon missiles to Taiwan. This time, the US Naval Air Systems Command has awarded a contract for the mobile, land-based version of the missile to Boeing for the first time, according to Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the US-Taiwan Business Council, on behalf of Taiwan.

This comes after the US Department of Defense announced the $1.7 billion deal with Boeing earlier this month, but did not mention Taiwan as a buyer.

Why it matters: The defense agreement came about in the middle increased tensions between Washington and Beijingg, particularly over Taiwan, a self-governing island nation over which China claims sovereignty. Xi’s army then conducted war drills in Taiwan president Tsai Ing Wen met the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy this month in California.

In the meantime, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy proposed over the weekend to “put a gun in every Taiwanese household” to prevent China from invading Taiwan, reported Washington Times.
