Taiwan trained Tesla CEO Elon Musk after Billionaire recently said there was ‘some inevitability’ around Xi Jinpings try to take control of the self-governing island.
What happened: Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs took to Twitter to criticize Musk for his comments on rising political tensions between Beijing and Taipei. It is important to note that China claims sovereignty about Taiwan.
“The [Chinese Communist Party’s] Bullying and threats are a problem, especially for those who would rather remain free and democratic. The [People’s Republic of China] Expansionary policies go against the rules-based international order and the status quo. Mr. Elon Musk,” the Taiwan Ministry of Defense tweeted, citing a video from Musk’s recent interview with CNBC.
Musk said earlier this week he was concerned Escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and China and thinks everyone else should be concerned too.
The tech mogul said, “China’s official policy is that Taiwan should be integrated” and that “you don’t have to read between the lines.”
Why it matters: This isn’t the first time Musk has done something controversial comments on the China-Taiwan issue. Last October, the second richest man in the world said he believed it two governments could strike a “reasonably palatable” deal. His comments were slammed by Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Washington, who said, “Taiwan sells many products, but our freedom and democracy are not for sale.”
He was also publicly criticized for posting a Twitter poll last year with his suggestions for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, including: Kiev cedes territory to Moscow.
