In a battle of undefeated college football teams on Saturday, the underdog won and broke a 15-straight loss streak against his rival. The win caused fans to storm the field and take away some unique souvenirs that the school had raised money to replace.
What happened: The University of Tennessee football team and the University of Alabama both went undefeated in Saturday’s competition, finishing sixth and third, respectively, in the AP Top 25 poll.
Tennessee defeated Alabama 52-49 in a game that was aired on CBS, a unit of Paramount Global PARAGRAPHPARAA. The win marked the first time Tennessee had defeated Alabama in the annual game since 2006.
The game could have a big impact on that College Football Playoffs also. Tennessee touched moved up to third place in the most recent AP poll and Alabama fell to sixth place, becoming the best team to lose.
Given the nature of the win and the fact that it was a home game and Tennessee hadn’t beaten Alabama since 2006, the fans in attendance wanted to celebrate.
Fans stormed the field to celebrate after the game, also ripping out the goalposts, a move that will cost Tennessee to replace as parts of at least one goalpost ended thrown in the Tennessee River.
Tennessee took to Twitter to solicit donations to help fund goalpost costs.
“Remember how we tore down the goalposts, dragged them out of Neyland and dumped them in the Tennessee River? Yes that was great. Anyway, it turns out we need goalposts on our pitch to be able to play next week’s game. Can you help us?” the university tweeted with a praying hands emoji.
A shared link led fans to a side Soliciting a $150,000 donation to “pay the bill for our new goalposts.”
“Make a gift, honor history,” the website reads.
Donation amounts include $25, $100, $250, $500 and some related to the outcome of the game, with donation amounts of $16 honoring the number of seasons since Tennessee vs. Alabama, $52.49 for the bottom line and $1,019.15 in honor of…
