BETHESDA, Md. and OAKVILLE, Ont., Nov. 01, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Terrestrial Energy has partnered with Orano, a world leader in the nuclear fuel cycle.

This work shows that nuclear fuel packaging used today by Orano for the nuclear industry is suitable for the transport and delivery of IMSR fuel. The scope of the assessment included compliant packaging and transportation for Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and select EU countries. This result avoids the costly and lengthy process of designing, licensing and manufacturing new nuclear fuel packaging and has important commercial implications for the early deployment of IMSR systems in key markets.

Nuclear reactor fuel packaging and transportation are subject to strict regulatory requirements that ensure safety and protect property and the environment. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and regional government agencies have established regulations for the safe handling of radioactive material. Regulations are managed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in Canada, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in the United States, and the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in the United Kingdom. , and in France by the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN).

“Orano has long been a trusted nuclear fuel cycle partner to the global energy industry, including managing and operating more than 5,000 shipments of nuclear material each year,” said Amir Vexler, President and CEO of Orano USA. “Next-generation technologies like Terrestrial Energy’s IMSR will deliver new and valuable commercial applications of nuclear power. We look forward to using our expertise in the nuclear fuel cycle to advance the development of these nuclear power plants of the future.”
