Elon Musk-led Tesla Inc TSLA said it had doubled production of its Model Y Cars in the electric vehicle manufacturer’s Gigafactory in Berlin, Brandenburg this week.
What happened: Tesla Europe tweeted on Sunday that its German production unit built 4,000 units of the Model Y in one week.
Tesla has set itself the goal of accelerating production in Brandenburg from the start.
In October last year, Tesla confirmed that production of the Model Y had reached 2000 vehicles. The new numbers point to a rapid ramp-up, with production doubling in less than six months.
Last month Brandenburg’s Economics Minister Jorg Steinbach Production would be sped up at the factory to reduce customer wait times.
Despite attempts to speed up production, Model Y was unable to meet customer demands because expected delivery dates were pushed back. The Model Y is Tesla’s best-selling electric vehicle and became the best-selling car ever Europe in November.
Why it matters: Last week it was time reported that Tesla would focus its battery cell production in the USA despite the assembly of battery systems in the Brandenburg plant. This raised concerns that the European plant will become less important for the US electric vehicle maker.
Gigaberlin employs over 9,000 people, Reuters reported last month. However, the factory still aims to expand the workforce at the plant, according to the Tesla website.
The factory is now more focused on the production of vehicles and scaled-down battery cell manufacturing.
