Five states are preparing to vote to legalize cannabis this November — Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Dakota, and South Dakota — while Colorado could eventually legalize psychedelics.

If the five marijuana initiatives are passed next month, more than half of the US population will have legal access to cannabis, NORML’s political director noted Morgan fox.

“There is no point in continuing to allow the cannabis market to be controlled by unregulated operators and in some cases criminal organizations for something that is objectively safer than alcohol and that other states have shown can be regulated” said Fox.

The initiative would allow Adults over 21 to purchase and possess up to one ounce of cannabis from licensed retailers medical and recreational usewith no legal home cultivation, nor provisions for erasing or sealing prior marijuana records.

A additional tax could be levied on the sale of recreational cannabis in addition to existing sales taxes.

The State The legislature would not be able to do this repeal or change medical marijuana laws without obtaining voter approval, nor local governments could hold elections to ban adult use retailers.

A current survey showed that 59% of state voters support the measure, 29% oppose it, and 13% are undecided.
