Tourists in DC can now legally buy weed as Mayor Bowser signs…

Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, DC (D) made a significant move for two industries this week — tourism and cannabis. On Monday, Bowser signed a bill that would allow tourists visiting the nation’s capital to self-certify as medical marijuana patients without a doctor’s recommendation.

The action comes about three months after her signed enacted the Medical Marijuana Self-Certification Emergency Amendment Act of 2022, allowing it DC residents can self-certify as MMJ patients and purchase cannabis from licensed retailers.

Now the self-certification right is extended in principle to foreigners visiting the capital.

Why self-certification at all?

Although adult cannabis was legalized in Washington DC in 2014, a Driver who remained valid During several presidential budget proposals, the district was prevented from fully operating its legal cannabis program.

We know we can protect residents, support local businesses, and bring clarity to the community by bringing more medical marijuana patients into the legal marketplace in a timely manner and doing more to level the playing field for licensed medical marijuana providers,” Mayor said Bowser said as she signed the new law, “I applaud the Council for advancing this innovative solution to a complex issue and I look forward to working with the Council and ABRA on enduring, broader legislation in the future working on medical marijuana.”
