Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis didn’t even have officially launched his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nominationbut its popularity seems to be growing every day.

What happened: About 40% of Republican primary voters have sided with DeSantis in a nationwide hypothetical 9-candidate poll conducted by WPA Intelligence. About 1,000 verified GOP primary voters were polled for this purpose between February 13 and 16.

The Florida governor had a clear nine-point lead over the former president donald trump, which received the support of 31% of respondents. Former Governor of South Carolina Nicki Haley, which announced its candidacy earlier this month was only third with 8% support. About 8% of respondents preferred the former Vice President Mike Pence.

Liz Cheney was the choice of 5% of respondents.

Trump vs. DeSantis in Head-Head Match: The WPA poll also found DeSantis widened his lead over Trump in a head-to-head match. DeSantis has the support of 57% of GOP voters, compared to 33% for Trump.

“President Trump is still liked by most Republicans, but our main voters are pragmatic,” said Founder and CEO of WPA Intelligence Chris Wilson, The The New York Post reports.

“They like his politics but believe the party needs a new face and a new leader.”

The results contrasted with a Harvard/CAPS Harris poll conducted between February 15 and 16, which found Trump widening his lead over DeSantis for earning the GOP nomination. The same poll also showed that the Florida governor has a better chance of winning if Trump excels. Meanwhile, a Politico/Morning Consult poll conducted between Feb. 10-12 showed that approx 69% of respondents say they prefer a candidate under 70 Trump is currently 76.
