Elon Musk, who took the reins Twitter in Oct 2022, has received backlash from both staff and users over a number of moves it has taken – and Mary Trump is no exception in the long list of critics.

What happened: There has been a huge outcry in recent weeks that the platform has removed old blue checks that helped verify the identities of high-profile users and distinguish them from scammers.

To keep the blue checks, users now have to pay $8 per month, while businesses have to come up with $1,000 per month plus $50 for each partner and employee.

Although not related to development, earlier president Donald Trump’s Niece, Maria Trump, shot at Musk in a tweet on Sunday. “Nice to see Musk transform Twitter into his very own version of ‘The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,'” she wrote.

By calling Musk, Mary Trump was referring to an episode in the first season of the television series “Twilight Zone” in which alien invaders cause a power outage, wreak havoc on a small community, and expose mankind’s self-destructive behavior.

In response to Mary Trump’s tweet, one user wrote: “Well put! Perfect parallel.”

Why it matters: After taking over Twitter, Musk cut more than half of the company’s jobs. The platform currently employs fewer than 2,000 people worldwide, down from around 7,500 before the acquisition.

The billionaire has also alienated advertisers by pushing a free speech agenda that has allowed racism and misinformation to thrive on the platform. The move has since impacted Twitter’s bread-and-butter ad revenue.

In a recent Twitter Spaces conversation with the BBC, Musk said that Twitter is currently working towards breaking even and could return to profitability soon. He also said several advertisers who previously fled the platform have returned.
