Elon Musk has launched a new plan to counteract the negative effects of Twitter Blue verification was rolled out briefly and then retracted.

What happened: When a social media influencer who passed the @Cryptoking Twitter handle alerted Musk to his inability to edit despite having a verified badge, the billionaire apologized and gave a new timeline for the “verified” feature to be reintroduced on.

“Sorry for the delay, we expect to launch Verified next week on Friday,” Musk said. He also pointed out that there would be three different colored badges for verification – gold checks for corporations, gray checks for government accounts and blue checks for individuals, whether they are celebrities or not.

All verified accounts are manually authenticated before verification is activated, he said. While admitting the trial is painful, he said it was necessary.

When asked if the color checks are customizable and if there will be a red check for those who commit cheating but are verified, Musk said willful impersonation/cheating will result in account suspension.

“Organization affiliation, bio, and follower count differentiate between people who truly share the same name,” he added.

Why it matters: After Musk took over Twitter, he made several changes to the platform, including the decision to charge $8 per month for blue tick verification. This feature briefly went live, but led to the spawning impersonators on the platform, which in turn negatively impacted the original accounts they claimed to be.
