Twitter will charge users for secure accounts via text message: Here’s…

Social media giant Twitter recently announced that it will start loading to authenticate its subscribers and secure their accounts via text messaging as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method.

The company recently tweeted that after March 20, “only Twitter Blue subscribers can use text messaging as a two-factor authentication method.”

Two-factor authentication adds a layer of security to Twitter accounts instead of just entering a password to log in.

In a blog post, Twitter announced the two-factor login method.

“While historically a popular form of 2FA, unfortunately we’ve seen phone number-based 2FA used – and abused – by bad actors,” Twitter said in the to blog.

“Starting today, we are no longer allowing accounts to opt-in to the text messaging/SMS method of 2FA unless they are Twitter Blue subscribers.

Twitter is giving non-Twitter Blue subscribers who are already enrolled in 2FA 30 days to opt out of this method and opt in to a different one.

However, disabling SMS 2FA does not automatically disconnect your phone number from your Twitter account.

“We encourage non-Twitter Blue subscribers to use an authenticator app or security key method instead. These methods require you to have the authentication method in place and are a great way to ensure your account is secure,” the blog post reads.

One Twitter user mentioned that the company is changing its policies “because telcos have been using bot accounts to pump 2FA SMS” and that the company loses $60 million annually “to fraudulent SMS.”

Response to the post, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said, “Yes.”
