President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Congress on Wednesday and received a standing ovation during his nearly 25-minute address.
What happened?: Selenskyj called for non-partisanship in his speech to the Congress, which was held in English. He said that while Russia can stop its aggression, Congress can help Ukraine achieve victory.
It is “naive” to wait for peace steps by Russia, Zelensky said. “If Russia cannot reach our cities, it tries to destroy them with missile attacks.”
“Russia has found an ally in its genocidal policy in Iran,” said Zelenskyy. “One terrorist found another.”
“Ukraine has never asked American soldiers to fight on our land,” the Ukrainian president said, adding that his soldiers are capable of operating US equipment.
‘Not Charity:’ Zelenskyy thanked Congress for the financial packages provided and still to be approved. He said the money was not charity but an investment in global security.
Zelenskyy raised the lack of electricity in Ukraine due to the Russian attacks and told the joint session of Congress that his compatriots would celebrate Christmas by candlelight.
The President also presented a battle flag to Congress in a symbolic gesture. In return, he received a US Standard from the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. She said the flag was raised in honor of Zelenskyy’s visit to the capital.
