Warner Bros Discovery Inc. WBD makes “several Lord of the rings movies” with Newline cinemathe production company behind the original trilogy.
What happened: Warner Brothers’ CEO David Zaslav announced that Mike DeLuca And Pam Abdy – Heads of the newly installed studio – have signed a deal to make “several” films based on JRR Tolkiens books.
The announcement came during Thursday the company’s Q4 earnings call.
Zaslav did not reveal any other information about the project, but said, “The Lord of the Rings is one of the most iconic storytelling franchises of all time.”
Warner Bros and New Line Cinema are already working on an animated film called “The Lord of the Rings: The Domain of the Rohirrim.” It is due out next year, after to the edge.
Alongside this big announcement, which focuses on Middle-earth, Zaslav said the company will be releasing four DC movies this year, starting with “Shazam,” followed by “The Lightning.”
Why it matters: Warner Bros isn’t the only company with the idea of milking profits from the hugely popular Lord of the Rings franchise.
