Indoor air quality is a critical concern for Canada’s schools, colleges and universities. With so many students and staff spending most of their time indoors, it’s important to make sure the air they breathe is clean and healthy. Unfortunately, many educational institutions struggle with poor indoor air quality, leading to various health issues including allergies, asthma and even cancer.
Camfil Canada air filtration expert Berni Baier discussed the main factors affecting indoor air quality in schools. They are the following:
1. Occupancy within the room or overcrowding.
2. Poor maintenance of a ventilation system.
3. External Sources.
“Occupancy in the room or overcrowding. For example, if the room is only designed for 20 people but is occupied by 40 people, the air handling units will not be able to remove the particles quickly enough. This will increase concentration in the room and increase the chances of creating an unhealthy environment.
Poor maintenance of a ventilation system is a big problem. If the dampers are not working properly and are bringing in fresh air as intended, this will cause problems. If you don’t have the right air filters, inferior quality air filters, or air filters that aren’t the right size, that will also cause problems.
Camfil Canada believes that every student and staff member deserves to breathe clean, healthy air. That’s why they are committed to helping schools, colleges and universities in Canada improve their indoor air quality.
