New data from the American Gaming Association estimates that 20.5 million American adults will bet on the 2022 World Cup, representing 8% of the country’s adult population. The report estimates that $1.8 billion will be wagered during the tournament.

Of those who would place a bet, 48% said they would do so with an online sportsbook and 23% said they would place bets with a physical casino sportsbook.

“As the first World Cup with widespread availability of legal sports betting, this will surely be the most wagered soccer event ever in the US,” Senior Vice President, American Gaming Association Casey Clark said. “With more than half of all American adults having access to legal betting options in their home market, legal sports betting will deepen American fans’ engagement with the world’s most-watched sporting event.”

According to the report, 78% of bettors consider it important to place their bets legally, either physically or online.

Gen Z and Millennials showed the most interest in World Cup 2022 betting at 11% and 14%, respectively, compared to Gen X (8%) and Baby Boomers (2%).
