Xi Jinping declares ‘decisive victory’ over COVID-19

president Xi Jinping-led government in China declared a “decisive victory” over COVID-19 after abruptly ending curbs in December.

What happened: China’s Standing Committee of the Politburo, in a meeting on Thursdaysaid, “With continuous efforts to streamline COVID-19 prevention and control measures since November 2022, China’s response to COVID-19 has made a smooth transition in a relatively short period of time.”

“A major decisive victory in epidemic prevention and control has been achieved,” senior Chinese leaders said, adding that Beijing’s efforts have resulted in more than 200 million people receiving medical treatment, including nearly 800,000 critical cases.

Leaders also warned that while China’s situation has drastically improved, the virus continues to mutate and spread around the world.

The Politburo Standing Committee also stressed that Beijing would do so Increasing vaccination coverage in the elderly and to increase the supply of medical supplies and production.

China’s claims of the world’s lowest death rate from COVID-19 have been widely criticized and questioned by experts on Beijing’s data. Many experts and organizations, including the World Health Organizationhave said China has been underreporting deaths for months. Widespread media reports also showed overcrowded infirmaries and morgues.

China’s official data recorded only about 80,000 COVID deaths in hospitals in the two months thereafter dropped its zero-COVID curbs in December.
