Xi Jinping repeated on Monday China’s “one country, two systems” proposal for Taiwan While Beijing concluded its 14th National People’s Congress (NPC).
What happened: The Chinese President stressed in his speech that Beijing’s practice of “one country, two systems” and the great cause of reunification of the fatherlandstate media Xinhua reported.
The Chinese head of state emphasized this his country would resist any move toward independence on the democratic island and promote the concept of “one country, two systems” and the need for “motherland reunification”.
On Friday, Xi was elected Chinese President for a third term after nearly 3,000 members of China’s Stamp Parliament voted unanimously in the Great Hall for an election with no other candidate.
After Xi’s rise to power his faithful helper Li Qiang received the nod as China’s new prime minister replacing the outgoing one Li Keqiang – who was close to former President Hu Jintao.
The two nations have long wallowed in political differences as Xi and his government claim the island nation as their own territory, while the democratically appointed Taiwanese government rejects its claims to sovereignty.
China has often offered Taiwan a “one country, two systems” model similar to that of Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to China in 1997.
Over the past year, Beijing has massively increased military and political pressure to try to get Taipei to accept Beijing’s sovereignty, including staging war games near the island and Fighter planes in Taiwan’s air defense zone.
