Why it matters: Fake Instagram Followers have been an issue for a long time.

This is because there are services that sell fake subscribers to anyone who pays them.

However, these purchased followers are likely bots or dormant accounts that don’t typically engage with posts, making it increasingly difficult for users to use them to manipulate how many shares and likes they have.

If Instagram rolled out this feature for all users, it could help Instagrammers differentiate between accounts with real and fake followers.
