Scenes of rare but mild (by Western standards) protest Xi Jinpings communist government in the Chinese capital were shared on social media on Thursday.

Two banners were displayed on the overpass of the Sitong Bridge in northwest Beijing, where smoke billowed and a voice recording of the banners’ messages was broadcast over loudspeakers.

“Strike, depose the dictator and national traitor Xi Jinping,” read one banner.

A second translated: “Say no to the Covid test, yes to the food. No to lockdown, yes to freedom. No to lying, yes to dignity. No to the Cultural Revolution, yes to reform. No to the great leader, yes to the vote. Don’t be a slave, be a citizen.”

The Catalyst: The 20th party convention is set to begin on Sunday, at which Xi is expected to break with recent political tradition to cement a third five-year term as the Asian country’s top leader.

The move goes against norms introduced in the 1980s when a two-term limit was enacted to avoid a one-man rule. China also has an age limit of 68 for its committee members, which does not appear to apply to Xi, who turned 69 in June.
