The three hours after midnight are, by a wide margin, the most dangerous time to be on the road in Charlotte, according to a new analysis of 2024 fatal crash data from Shane Smith Law, which found that 21 of the city’s 107 fatal crashes, roughly one in five, occurred between midnight and 2:59 a.m. alone. The single deadliest hour of the entire year fell between 2:00 a.m. and 2:59 a.m., which recorded 10 fatal crashes on its own, a pattern the report attributes to a collision of alcohol-impaired driving following bar and restaurant closing times, lighter traffic that encourages higher speeds, and sharply reduced visibility overnight.

Risk remained elevated well beyond that peak hour. Between 3:00 a.m. and 5:59 a.m., Charlotte recorded another 12 fatal crashes, a window the report links less to impairment and more to driver fatigue among shift workers, early commuters, and anyone who has been awake for extended periods, a state research has repeatedly shown impairs reaction time and judgment in ways comparable to alcohol. The morning commute brought its own distinct danger: between 6:00 a.m. and 8:59 a.m., 14 fatal crashes were recorded, driven by heavy traffic volume, aggressive driving, distracted commuters, and school drop-off congestion, risks the report expects to intensify as Charlotte’s population continues to grow.

By contrast, late morning and early afternoon proved to be the safest stretch of the day. The 9:00 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. window saw just 8 fatal crashes, while noon to 2:59 p.m. recorded only 3, the lowest total of any period examined, a reflection of full daylight, lighter traffic stress, and fully alert drivers.

Danger returned with the evening and overnight commute. The 3:00 p.m. to 5:59 p.m. window, which overlaps directly with school pickup and the afternoon rush, recorded 12 fatal crashes and a 33% speeding involvement rate, meaning a significant share of crashes during school pickup hours involved a driver traveling over the limit. The 6:00 p.m. to 8:59 p.m. window saw 17 fatal crashes, and the late evening window from 9:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. proved slightly more dangerous still, with 18 fatal crashes, making the stretch from 6:00 p.m. through midnight a sustained multi-hour period of elevated risk driven by post-work fatigue, social drinking, recreational travel, and higher speeds as roads decongest.

The report finds that behavioral risk factors compound sharply within these windows. Of the 32 alcohol-impaired fatal crashes recorded in Charlotte in 2024, 13 occurred during the midnight-to-3-a.m. window alone, a 62% impairment rate for that period, while the 2:00 a.m. hour specifically saw 55% of its crashes involve a driver at or above the legal blood alcohol limit and 40% involve speeding, making it the single most behaviorally loaded hour on Charlotte’s roads. Speeding, meanwhile, proved far more consistent throughout the day than impairment, factoring into 47% of evening crashes, 43% of early morning crashes, 42% of overnight crashes, and all three fatal crashes recorded between noon and 2:59 p.m.

These hourly patterns take on added significance given Charlotte’s broader risk profile. While Mecklenburg County as a whole posted a fatal crash rate below both state and national averages in 2024, Charlotte’s own death rate, 11.9 per 100,000 residents, actually exceeded the national average of 10.8, meaning the specific dangerous windows identified in the report are unfolding inside a city already carrying more than its share of the county’s traffic risk. The report’s authors argue that as Charlotte continues to grow, understanding precisely when its roads turn dangerous, rather than relying on broad annual averages, will be essential for shaping future infrastructure planning, traffic enforcement staffing, and public safety campaigns.

“The data shows Charlotte’s roads don’t become dangerous at random, they become dangerous on a predictable schedule,” said a spokesperson for Shane Smith Law. “Understanding exactly when and why crashes spike is the first step toward preventing the next one.”

The report’s authors argue that because different hours are driven by different combinations of impairment, fatigue, and speed, no single enforcement strategy, whether increased late-night DUI checkpoints or daytime speed enforcement alone, is likely to meaningfully reduce Charlotte’s fatal crash total on its own.
