“It makes no sense, neither politically nor militarily,” he added.

Putin also clarified that the earlier warning of his readiness for action “all available means to protect Russia‘ was not a nuclear threat, but merely a response to Western statements about their possible use of nuclear weapons.

He mentioned the former British Prime Minister Liz Truss‘ statement in August, in which she said she was ready to use nuclear weapons if she took over Britain’s top job, a remark Putin said worried the Kremlin.

“What should we have thought?” said Putin. “We saw it as a coordinated position, as an attempt to blackmail us.”

In a lengthy speech, the Russian leader criticized the US for trying to corner Russia and said his country is not the enemy of the West but will continue to resist it alleged dictates of Western neoliberal elites.

“Their goal is to make Russia more vulnerable and to make it a tool to carry out their geopolitical tasks, they failed to achieve it and they will never succeed,” he said.
