Tesla driver thanks Autopilot for avoiding rogue tire after crash:…

Despite the whole setback Tesla, Inc.’s TSLA The advanced driver assistance system Autopilot has recently demonstrated its safety credentials.

What happened: A Tesla owner shared on Twitter video footage of a freeway crash captured by his vehicle’s Autopilot camera and saved to the car’s flash drive.

Video footage showed a black Kia vehicle overtaking the Tesla from the left. However, as the Kia passed a converted pickup truck with extruded tires, its side wheel detached from the axle and went under the Kia, sending it flying.

When the loose wheel rolled over after the accident, footage showed the Tesla swerving to the right, which the driver claimed the Autopilot vision detected the fast-moving object and responded to quickly.

Why it matters: Tesla is at an advanced stage beta testing of its full self-driving software, which would mean a major upgrade from autopilot. Elon Musk hopes to reach autonomy level 4 or 5 with the FSD software when it is made available for wider use.

Meanwhile, critics accuse the company of enhancing people’s lives by road-testing a half-baked technology.
