Why it matters: The services totaled more than $5,000, which is more than the limit for gifts to lawmakers set by federal laws and ethics codes.

The Board of the Office of Congressional Ethics recommended that the House panel continue to review “the allegations regarding Rep. Ocasio-Cortez because there are reasonable grounds to believe that she accepted improper gifts in connection with her attendance at the 2021 Met Gala.”

Ocasio-Cortez wore a white dress designed by Brother Vellies in 2021 with the words “tax the rich” emblazoned in red on the back.

The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser to benefit the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is a prestigious fashion event attended by celebrities from all backgrounds.
