SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, announced the launch of a new satellite service focused on governments.

What happened: SpaceX said Starshield will use its satellite internet service Starlink technology and launchability in support of national security efforts. The difference between Starlink and Starshield is that the former is intended for consumers and commercial establishments, while the latter is designed for government use.

According to the company, the focus is initially on three areas, namely earth observation, communication and hosted payload. The service will launch satellites and acquire payloads and deliver processed data directly to the user.

To ensure security, in addition to the end-to-end encryption of user data found in Starlink, Starshield will use an additional high-security cryptographic function to host classified payloads and securely process data.

Why it matters: SpaceX said its ongoing work with the Department of Defense and other partners underscores its ability to provide “large-scale capabilities in space and on the ground.”

Starlink’s service was made available to Ukraine at the request of the government in the wake of the country’s war with Russia. It helped avoid an internet blackout in the country and also assisted the Ukrainian army in fighting the war.

In August, the US Air Force announced that it would enlist Starlink’s service for its European unit in support of the 86th Airlift Squadron, based at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
