Battle of the Studios: Paramount is asking $52 million for “South Park”

  • On Wednesday, Paramount hit back at WBD for allegedly withholding two required payments of $26 million each, bringing the total unpaid fees to $52 million.
  • The counterclaim argues that the unpaid fees cover the 318 “South Park” episodes streamed on HBO Max, TechCrunch reports.
  • South Park Studios has complied with the terms of the written term sheet. WarnerMedia does not, claims the counterclaim.
  • Instead, despite the continued use and profit from the more than 300 episodes of South Park that are still available to stream on HBO Max, Warner Media refuses to pay tens of millions of dollars in royalties that South Park Studios collects for the exploitation right are owed this content.
  • In February, WBD sued Paramount and MTV Entertainment’s South Park Digital Studios. Warner is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars for Paramount’s alleged breach of contract.
  • In 2019, Warner agreed to pay over $500 million to license “South Park,” an animated feature that aired for decades on Paramount’s Comedy Central cable television network, to its streaming platform HBO Max.
  • While bidding for the “South Park” rights, Warner reportedly refused to share the show’s rights to Paramount’s streaming service when it proposed.
  • Price promotion: PARA shares traded 2.06% lower at $22.10 on the last check Thursday.
