Rhode Island cannabis advertising disparity with Massachusetts highlights the unlevel playing field where neighboring billboard operators benefit while their RI peers face restrictive regulations.

Joe Pakurisone owner of a cannabis dispensary near the Massachusetts border laments the impact of this discrepancy, estimating that there would be a substantial increase in sales of over 30% if given the same advertising opportunities. Per The Providence Journal.

What happened

Pakuris, owner of Mother Earth Wellness in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, defiantly put up billboards on a nearby building to advertise the location of his pharmacy off I-95, prompting him with a stern Department of Business Regulation (DBR) warning. was confronted by Rhode Island.

The state’s strict regulations prohibit cannabis companies from advertising; They threatened him with hefty fines of up to $10,000 a day and potential license consequences.

pakuris argued that he should have the right to advertise his location without violating the ban. Despite its objections, DBR stands firm and cites existing regulations for the state’s medical marijuana program. However, Pakuris claims DBR can change the rules, emphasizing the damage done to the industry and the need for responses.

RI Cannabis Developments

As the state awaits the formation of the Cannabis Control Commission, which could potentially revise the rules, Governor Dan McKee‘S Upcoming events obtain the approval of the legislature.
