Don’t Call Him ‘President’ Vladimir Putin: Here’s What the Russian…

One of the most famous world leaders could get a new title. So Russian president Wladimir Putin could be addressed by the citizens of the country in the future.

What happened: The Russian Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) wants the term “ruler” to be used for Vladimir Putin, according to state-run RIA Novosti news agency shared by news week in July 2022.

According to the report, Putin would be referred to as Private (ruler) Vladimir Putin to get away from using the term “president” which is based on a foreign language.

The term president “has always embarrassed us,” said the Liberal Democratic Party, a pro-Kremlin party.

The party said the term was first used in the United States in the late 1800s and later “spread around the world.”

“In our country, by historical standards, this is generally a new word, and until it has fully taken root, you can safely replace it,” the party said.

Ruler and “head of state” are both terms that the party says are more commonly understood in Russia than president.

Why it matters: Former leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vladimir ZhirinovskyThe president, who died in April, had previously advocated for the ruler of Russia to be referred to as “Supreme Ruler” instead of President.

In 2020, Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, rejected a proposal to change the name to “Supreme Ruler”. President Putin had no opinion on the 2020 name change and has not commented on the LDPR’s recent comments.

In a further move to move away from United States-derived words, a proposal by the LDPR calls for the use of a new dictionary in Crimea that replaces words “borrowed from English”.
