Instagram adds security tools to protect creators from abuse…

Metaplatforms Inc.‘s META Instagram has introduced new features that address cases of cyber abuse, harassment and a growing number of court cases.

What happened: On Thursday, Instagram rolled out new security tools like advanced user blocking and more. “Now, when you block someone, you have an opportunity to block other accounts they may already have, making it harder for them to re-engage with you on Instagram,” the platform noted.

The feature is a follow-up to last year’s update, which allowed users to ban not just a single account, but all new accounts the person might create.

To protect Creator account users from malicious message requests and comments, Instagram is testing automatic activation of hidden words. This feature also protects users from seeing fraudulent message requests, lewd Stories replies, and more.

Additionally, the platform is expanding the use of nudges to encourage people to take a break before sending a hurtful comment or message request.

Why it matters: Social media platforms such as Twitter Inc.‘s TWTR app of the same name, snap inc‘s SNAP Snapchatmeta Facebook and others have faced regulatory issues around the world in the past.
