Microsoft Corporation said Russia would step up its cyber efforts midst Wladimir Putinwar is raging in Kyiv to disrupt military and humanitarian supply chains; and weaken allies’ support Ukraine.
What happened: General Manager of Microsoft’s Digital Threat Analysis Center, Clan Wattson the company’s On the Issues blog, urged customers to prepare for more Russian cyberattacks this winter.
“The recent execution of a ransomware-type attack – known as the Prestige – by Russian military intelligence in Poland could be a harbinger of Russia expanding cyberattacks further beyond Ukraine’s borders,” Watts said.
The tech giant said that in addition to missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, Russia has also launched “complementary” cyber attacks on Ukraine and its supply chains based abroad.
Watts added that these efforts aim to “undermine US, EU and NATO political support for Ukraine and shake the confidence and resolve of Ukrainian citizens.”
The general manager warned that while Russian efforts to increase popular dissent have had limited impact so far, they “anticipate what could become a tactic of expansion in the coming winter.”
This comes after Microsoft in November blamed Moscow for October’s ransomware attacks on infrastructure companies in Ukraine and Poland, aimed at attacking companies involved in delivering military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, since the start of the Ukraine war, Russia has repeatedly hacked Ukrainian satellite systems, energy companies and other critical infrastructurefueling international concerns about how Putin will next deploy Moscow’s sophisticated cyber capabilities.
