What happened: Pichai said he believes AI “will touch everything” and that there will be “major societal disruptions in the job market” during a year interview with The Verge, which was released on Friday.
However, the Google CEO also believes that if implemented correctly, AI could make several jobs “better”. Citing the legal profession as an example, Pichai said that even as technology advances, the need for certain skills and services will not be entirely eliminated.
“So AI will improve the profession in some ways, might have some unintended consequences, but I’m almost betting there might be more lawyers in 10 years,” Pichai said.
“The underlying reasons why there are laws and legal systems will not go away, because these are the problems of humanity,” he added.
Pichai compared the work scares caused by AI to those caused by the advent of the personal computer, internet and cellphones, saying an AI “platform shift” is underway.
“Twenty years ago, when people were predicting exactly what technological automation would do, there were very specific announcements about entire job categories that were going to disappear. That hasn’t fully come true yet,” Pichai said.
But he said it’s “not entirely clear” how AI will impact future jobs. “I think there will be major societal disruptions in the labor market,” Pichai said, adding, “Governments need to be involved.” There needs to be adjustments. Skills will be important. But I think we shouldn’t underestimate the positive side of some of these things either.”
