Electric vehicle stocks meandered to a mixed close in the holiday-shortened week ended Jan. 6. Tesla, Inc. TSLA share slaughtered further amid concerns about the demand outlook.

Well, here are the main events that took place in the EV space during the week:

Tesla Q4 deliveries, price cuts in China and more: Tesla’s shares plunged more than 12% on Tuesday after the company reported lower-than-expected fourth-quarter deliveries. The numbers reflect slacking demand amid the economic slowdown and competition hurting the company’s market share.

A few days later, Tesla traded a sharp reduction in the prices of its Chinese-made vehicles. The price cuts ranged from 5.7% to 13.5% and applied to the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured at Giga’s Shanghai facility. While analysts called the decision a smart move to stem market share erosion, Investors sold the shares on fears of a further weakening of demand and a squeeze in margins caused by the price cuts.

In a further development, Tesla has listed Model S and Model Y vehicles for sale on its China website. These vehicles are not manufactured locally and must be exported from the USA

Because the Internal Revenue Service’s vehicle qualification standards for the EV tax credit permitted under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 were found negative for Tesla, CEO Elon Musk raised concerns about the tax breaks and urged customers to report to the federal agency. The IRS had solicited public opinion on the tax credit rules.
